Move planning …

What to watch out for when budgeting

Surprises, big ones

Budget moving options sometimes don’t include the use of blankets and ropes, for instance, an extra charge they levy on the day. Always make sure that you are comparing apples with apples when getting quotes, like the size of the team.

Informal, untrained labour

Even large moving companies use informal labour, sometimes without training or experience. Ensure that complaints exclude theft & breakages.

Competition & service

The industry is very pressurised and competitive, every mover will strive to provide you with the lowest quotation for your business. Just ensure that everything you need is included up-front

Safety & security:

Not only is moving stressful, its disrupting. By telegraphing the move to anyone who might be watching or leaving our used boxes on the pavement, we may be jeopardizing security. Please don’t leave alarm or armed response arrangements to the last minute.

De-cluttering:

Moving is the perfect opportunity to de-clutter, every family has an accumulation of things they neither use nor need and sometimes it’s difficult to move with those things you don’t know how to get rid of and can’t leave behind. This leads to extra removal costs or even another trip.

Appliances:

Family members may be resistant to the move for a variety of reasons, remember that laundry can’t be done on the day, fridges and freezers must be defrosted and emptied, and satellite installations take time. You don’t want to make the move more frustrating than it absolutely has to be, for you or the kids.

Packing…

Box sizes and weight

As a rule of thumb, the heavier the items, the smaller the box, the Stock 5 is perfect for books and dinner services. A stock 6 is great for shoes and clothing, and stock 7+ for pillows and duvets.

Paper, not plastic

Unprinted paper can be torn and crumpled to fill all the empty spaces in a box, so that it keeps its shape and nothing can rattle around and break. Pack glasses upright for added safety

Get the tape to stick

There’s nothing worse than having a box come apart during loading. Rub all the air out between the tape and the box, and tape the underside corners for strength. Don’t forget to mark & number.

Wrapping…

Bubbles burst

Bubble wrap is addictive, and heavy items burst the bubbles, as do hands every time the item is handled. Spare a thought for handling crews trying to carry your double-door fridge with a layer of slippery plastic under their hands.

Aerothene

Tape doesn’t like this spongy covering much, if you have antiques or delicate but heavy items, let the professionals wrap them using pallet wrap to keep the aerothene tamed and in it’s place to aid carrying. We also use corners on mirrors and pack them upright.

What TV box?

If you didn’t keep it, we use bubble-wrap (flat side against the screen to prevent pattern transfer), and then cover this with corrugated cardboard, creating a makeshift ‘box’, rather safe than sorry, right? Remember that these items are usually broken through inexperience.

Appliances…

Washing machines

Drum locking pins come with all new washing machines, and need to be used when moving them. If you didn’t keep them, your mover can’t guarantee not to damage to the drum over speed bumps, but don’t forget to remove them before you do your next load…

Fridges

As with washing machine pipes, water and defrosting ice is the mover’s biggest concern. Next are the racks inside that can damage the lining of the fridge in transit. Fridges can’t be tilted more than a 45 degree angle and need to stand for at least an hour before switching on.

All those conveniences

Everything should be boxed for a move, including the snackwich maker, bread baker, pancake maker and coffee machine. Loose items are difficult to pack into the truck and take longer to carry, one by one. The same goes for lamps and ornaments…

Groceries…

The freezer is full

And no, it can’t just be moved like that, because it weighs too much. Save the bulk-buying at discount until after the move, when your budget really needs a break.

Cupboards

Consider not buying groceries for a month before the move, take stock and make those fancy meals. Remember that transporting groceries makes them really expensive after all.

For the ‘preppers

Transporting all your stock kinda defeats the object, except when it comes to valuable stash. Consider the month before the move is the perfect time to stage a future event practice run…

What if you don’t want it…

Linen cupboards

We all tend to ‘hoard’ old bedding and curtains, probably because they remind us of good times. If you can’t see yourself using something again, think of those in need. Most charity organisations will collect all your unwanted linen and other goods.

Movers aren’t collectors

By all means, if it’s worth something, store it, but moving companies can’t transport for free and can’t accept gifts that fill the truck space needed for the next move. We also can’t afford staff fighting over that bicycle… Please speak to management beforehand.

Sell it or give it to charity

Consider posting your unwanted items on OLX or Gumtree, hold a yard sale if you’re in a gated community or give your unwanted furniture to friends and family. We offer self-storage options, but advise customers to consider the costs of storage carefully before committing…

CALL US, OUR ADVISORY SERICE IS FREE TO ALL

Moving office…

We come to you and customise all office moves for business continuity:

We don’t just move furniture, we offer a free business continuity consulting service, to ensure that dismantling and re-assembly of furniture is managed in a time-sensitive manner. We can move a finance department of 12 from working at desk – to – working at desk in the new office within two hours (depending on the distance and logistics of the move).

Our dismantling and re-assembly crews work simultaneously with our transport crew, ensuring that down-time is reduced to the absolute minimum. Naturally we move businesses over weekends where possible and even overnight if required. Sensitive documents, time-sensitive work and all business continuity needs are taken into account through our business consulting expertise.

Project management, technical ‘glitches’ and up-time…

Time is money, so if the server isn’t stable or telephony isn’t up yet, how do you scale your move to keep your critical business functions running through such a disruptive but necessary event? Even the best planning exercise needs to be checked and checked again, too much always lands up “falling through the cracks”.

We encourage our clients to include us on their relocation project team, we are then able to remain flexible and provide scaling and ‘phase planning’. This is particularly relevant with the advent of Covid-19, we all need to work together to ensure that Occupational Health and Safety regulations are adhered to and exposure minimised during these disruptions to an already disrupted economy.

OHS, Governance and overtime…

Health and safety considerations are very important during a move, injuries occur due to a lack of planning and the blocking of staircases and doorways. The fewer staff in attendance, the better, this is no time to bring your child to work with you.

Although a weekend move is more convenient for most businesses, this assumes that all boxes and workstations are marked ahead of time, or movers won’t have access to staff to answer critical questions or pack personal items left in workstations on the day.

Information security needs to be borne in mind when relocating, sensitive information must be moved without compromising access. In some cases files need to be moved in one dedicated trip with full chain-of-custody supervision. This also requires that documents can be immediately locked up and secured on arrival, so furniture may need to be moved first.

Store…

Centurion:

As you will see from the map below, we are ideally situated to service major routes. Sunderland Ridge is on the R55, just a few minutes from the Centurion CBD, with direct access to the N14 highway. Self-storage units are housed inside our warehouse; naturally alarm and armed response with additional strict controls are in place to ensure the integrity of all goods stored.

Storage agreement

We do more…

Home adaptations or just a few ‘tweaks’…

We’ll plan, schedule and execute according to your home or office move  requirements
